Love To Read For Fun

Finding romance, one book at a time.

Gentlemen Prefer Succubi (Succubus Diaries)

Gentlemen Prefer Succubi - Jill Myles This is the first Paranormal Romance I've read involving succubus. My only other encounter with the species was when I watched an episode of Charmed and a Succubus was out sexing men and then killing them. In this book, Jackie's no killer; she's a lover only. She's a newly turned succubus who's trying to adjust to her new life. She went from being a nerdy, unnoticeable museum docent to being a hot, red-head with double DDs who has to have sex every two days to ease the Itch. I enjoyed reading this book. It was sex, humor and adventure rolled into a quick and easy read. A fallen angel, a vampire and a century old succubus who uses her Itch to make her living provides great laugh out loud moments. Considering that Jackie is a succubus and is in heat every two days, I found the eroticism to be pretty tame. Other than having sex in a church, Jackie's sexcapades were boring and not very hot. Jackie is a prudish succubus and fights against her newly aquired nature during the entire book. And that got on my nerves. I know that Jackie didn't have a say in the matter and was made a succubus against her will but I found her to be whiny, hard-headed, and judgmental, especially when it came to Remy's chosen profession. Remy makes the best of a bad situation while Jackie makes every situation she's in worse. Jackie ignores Remy's advice constantly. Jackie would ask for guidance, Remy would provide it and then Jackie would go and do the complete opposite. Because of Jackie's idiocy, she always ended up getting herself and the people around her in trouble. I don't know if becoming a succubus changes your personality like, if you were a moron pre-succubus that you're still a moron post-succubus. I would have liked to have had more background information on Jackie before the change to determine if that's how she was before being turned. I liked this book even though I didn't like the main character. Is that possible? Yes, when there are likable characters supporting the protagonist. The book is told in Jackie's POV so it was frustrating not to be able to get out of her idiotic head. There were plenty of times where I wanted to throw my Kindle because I was getting so frustrated with her. It's been a while since I've felt so strongly about a character. In this aspect, the author did a great job (if that's what she was going for). I was reading Gentleman Prefer Succubi and Darkfever at the same time and it was amazing how differently two characters who were thrust into an extreme, unfamiliar situation handled the transition. One was annoying and whiny while the other was annoying for awhile and then came to her senses and accepted her fate. Let's hope this happens for Jackie in Book 2 - Succubi Like It Hot.
