Sinful was the perfect book to end my Historical Romance Week. My emotions were all over the place while reading this book. The love story of Matthew and Jane reminded me of the romance in Passion. When I started reading Sinful, I hated Matthew. I found nothing redeemable about his character. Even when he was injured and in the hospital, I thought he got what he deserved. He's a heartless, careless, cold man who uses women for his own pleasure. Granted, he uses women who are made to be used; they know what they're getting into so there are no hurt feelings. But when his attentions turned towards Jane, the nurse that was caring for him, I knew no good could come of that relationship.I hated Matthew. I loved him. I despised him. I pitied him. Then I loved him again. The relationship between Matthew and Jane is not easy. When Matthew first meets Jane, he is temporary blinded thanks to being attacked in an alley. He becomes attracted to her voice and her touch. She is his Angel. Jane is a bastard. Her mother was the mistress of an aristocrat. Jane has grown up in poverty and shame and uses her career as a nurse as a way to have respectability. Jane decides to give in to her attraction to Matthew until the cold, harsh light of day opens her eyes to the man that the Earl of Wallingford truly is.Matthew and Jane have the odds stacked against them. Matthew believes that he is damaged beyond repair but Jane knows that there is more to Matthew than the cruelty and sinfulness that he displays. The question is, does Matthew believe that he's more than his reputation and his past? And is he willing to show that side of himself to Jane?Flutter Factor: Sinful is a wonderful tragic, romantic tale of two people who are damaged and find comfort in each other. I was engrossed in Matt and Jane's romance. Their love was not easy and several times during the book I wondered if these two would end up together. The odds were against them. Would their love prevail? Or would the past continue to get in the way. There were a couple of surprises in Sinful that I didn't see coming which provided more incite into Matthew's past and how it had shaped him. It made me love his character even more. Because I love Jane and Matthew's love story so much and apparently so did the author, you can visit Charlotte Featherstone's website to read the epilogue of Sinful that she was unable to include in the book. It's spoilery so don't read the epilogue if you haven't read Sinful.
