Love To Read For Fun

Finding romance, one book at a time.

Taken by Midnight (Midnight Breed Series #8)

Taken by midnight - Lara Adrian Taken by Midnight is the 8th novel of the Midnight Breed series. The story starts off with the Order returning to Boston after defeating the Ancient in Alaska. Jenna, who is recovering from being attacked by The Ancient, wakes up after being "asleep" for 5 days. She is fully recovered except that she has a little present courtesy of The Ancient; a tiny device implanted in her spine. Jenna is thrust into a world she didn't know existed. While the Order is working hard to figure out the origin of the implant, Jenna is trying to come to grips with what she has been through. I love the Midnight Breed series. The books in this series are an automatic buy for me. With that being said, Taken by Midnight did nothing for me. Out of the 8 books in this series, this one was my least favorite. I could not connect with the characters, Brock and Jenna. And I wasn't sold on their romantic relationship. Jenna annoyed me throughout the book. She's an ex-cop. She lost her husband and daughter in a car accident years ago. She hasn't quite gotten over her loss. She's independent and stubborn. Because of her stubbornness, she doesn't listen to other people's advice. She's going to do what she wants, damn the consequences or the warnings. At first, I could understand why she was this way. Jenna was attacked by a monster, has a foreign device implanted in her and has found out that vampires do exist. Her life is no longer her own as she has to stay under the Order's protection and observation. I get that she wants to escape and get back to Alaska, to a sense of normalcy. But when she continually ignores the advice of the Order and going half-cocked on her own, I started getting frustrated. And the frustration continued until the end.Brock is a great character but I didn't feel like we learned enough about him and his past. Besides the past issue regarding Corinne, a breedmate, we didn't know anything else about him. And my memory is so fuzzy that I can't recall any information about him from the previous books. Although I wasn't feeling the relationship, the sex scenes between Brock and Jenna were sizzling.I felt the book ended too abruptly. We don't know more about how the implant is going to affect Jenna. What is she becoming? Is she now a vampire? I wanted more information and I felt like we weren't given enough. I don't know how the issue of the implant will be resolved when future books will be focused on other characters. I do hope this isn't the end of Brock and Jenna's story. As always, I love the camaraderie of the brothers and the breedmates. I hope to continue to see more of them in the future. I'm ready for Tess to have that baby! Even though Taken by Midnight wasn't my favorite book of the series, I am anxiously anticipating the next installment, Deeper than Midnight.P.S. - I have an issue with the cover. Brock is African-American and the man on the book cover clearly isn't. It's very rare to have a person of color is a main character in a PNR novel and I hate that the cover of Taken By Midnight was white-washed.
